Founding Director & Editor-In-Chief

August 8, 2024 (Updated )

We’re delighted to announce the return of the Journo Resources Fellowship for 2024, our fourth year of running the scheme. This year we welcome new support from the Association of British Science Writers to launch the ABSW Diversity Fellowship, along with the continued support of The Printing Charity and Newsworks.

The Journo Resources Fellowship Programme is part of our commitment to supporting people in taking their first steps into the journalism industry. It’s open to anyone aged 18 and over; there are no age cut-offs and no required qualifications. The only prerequisite is that if you are studying a full-time course you must have less than one year left of study and you are also ineligible if you are already working a regular, paid, role in journalism.

Our fellowships aim to provide a practical boost for people looking to work within journalism. You will work with an experienced editor to produce a paid commission for Journo Resources, receive six months of one-to-one mentoring and tailored skills sessions, and join our supportive membership community.

We’re incredibly proud of fellows from our previous cohort who have gone on to secure work at outlets including the BBC, The Guardian, Journo Resources, Newsquest, The Financial TimesPositive News, and many more.

Whether you have just finished studying, are exploring a career change, or are hunting for your first journalism role, we’d love to hear from you. We are also open to hearing from people who are looking to return to journalism after an extended career break. We want to hear from anybody who is passionate about journalism and wants to break into the industry. Full details on how to apply are below.

Journo Resources
"I can't stress how much [my mentor's] support and guidance have helped me better understand and navigate the industry, especially when applying for entry-level jobs, and has opened up new opportunities and connections for me. She also couldn't have been better selected as a mentor based on my criteria."

How To Apply

Applying for the Journo Resources Fellowship, including the ABSW Diversity Fellowship, is really simple. All you need to do is fill out the short form below telling us:

  • An idea you would like to write for our website;
    • TIP: This must be a story that works for Journo Resources, take a look at our editorial content here and what our past fellows have written. Try to find a new angle that fits our style;
    • TIP: We really want to hear from people who are marginalised or underrepresented and want to hear your stories — but please don’t feel bound to writing about your identity. We want all your ideas, whatever they’re about.
  • A link to up to two things you have written or recorded;
    • TIP: This doesn’t have to be a professional piece of work! Student media, a self-published blog, or even an essay is fine. We’re not worried about big bylines.
    • TIP: Please don’t send us a portfolio site or author page — please pick out two pieces.
  • Up to 150 words on why you want to be a journalist;
  • Up to 150 words on why you want to join the scheme and how it will help you.
    • TIP: For both of these questions, try to use the full space available to you so we can get to know you and what you want to achieve.
    • TIP: Be honest in these answers; while we do want to know what you’ve achieved, we want to honestly hear about your experiences.

In your application, you will also be asked to share your LinkedIn profile. If you do not have an account we will also accept a link to another social media page or a portfolio website. We are unable to accept CVs.

Applications to the scheme close at 11.59pm on September 1, 2024 Please submit your application using the form below.

Everyone who applies will receive personal feedback, but we are unable to accept late submissions. Questions should be directed to hello@journoresources.org.uk or our social media accounts — we will try to answer questions as soon as possible, but we’re a tiny part-time team, so please be kind!

This year we also welcome the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW) as supporters of the fellowship, offering a specific ABSW Diversity Fellowship.

Andy Extance, chair of the ABSW, said: “The Association of British Science Writers always tries hard to enable people from underrepresented backgrounds to enter the profession. It therefore made total sense for us to support the Journo Resources Fellowship.”
