We are looking for a Deputy Editor to assist the Executive Editor with daily news operations, including team coordination and freelance cover. The role involves managing the daily output of our reporters, content planning and operating the website to ensure PinkNews is at the forefront of the LGBTQ+ digital publishing and storytelling landscape.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the Executive Editor in managing daily news content operations – including the rota of permanent team members and freelance cover.
  • Collaborating with the wider editorial and video content teams to brainstorm, plan and execute news stories that align with our mission and resonate with our readers.
  • Assisting in managing the news output on our social channels, ensuring all content is aligned with our brand and mission.
  • Research, pitch, edit, publish and write news stories that provide insight and analysis on the latest LGBTQ+ news and events.
  • Collaborating with the wider editorial team to plan and execute multimedia content such as videos, podcasts, and live social media coverage.
  • Ensuring all news content is accurate, inclusive, and respectful
  • Regularly review performance metrics and analyse traffic data to identify trends.
  • Develop data-driven insights and recommendations to optimise content strategies and improve engagement and reach.
  • Implementing best practice SEO techniques.
  • Assisting with social media and SEO strategies.
  • Upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity and ethics.
  • Keeping up to date with LGBTQ+ news and issues, as well as developments in the broader news industry.
  • Provide effective line management to reporters, taking an active role in their development and progression.
  • Attending industry events, junkets, premieres, and festivals to gather content and build relationships with key players in the industry.

Skills & Experience Required For The Role:

  • NCTJ qualification or equivalent
  • Experience in digital journalism, with time spent in an editorial leadership role
  • Exceptional editing and proofreading skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Strong understanding of SEO best practices and experience of optimising stories and pitches for search
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proven ability to manage and inspire junior team members, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) and digital publishing tools.
  • Ability to analyse web traffic and referral sources to inform content decisions, using tools such as Google Analytics 4 and Google Trends.
  • Creativity and adaptability, with a passion for staying ahead of industry trends.
  • A proven understanding of LGBTQ+ issues and terminology, and contacts in the political, third sector and/or entertainment space.
