Role purpose and overview

We are searching for an ambitious Editor to act as a senior member of The PIE team, working within a busy newsroom that covers the global breadth of international education. This role is primary responsible for planning and executing news coverage for The PIE News – with a new-look website ready for launch in May 2024.

You will also work with the wider team to create, plan, and execute content across The PIE’s portfolio of events and online activity. We require an original thinker who can suggest and deliver new angles on stories, spot narratives and ensure we maintain our reputation for original content. Views on attracting and engaging a growing global audience are essential.

You should be confident in running major breaking news stories and political reporting. This role will have line management responsibility, developing news reporters, ensuring that they reach their full potential and deliver original and exclusive news stories. Our coverage is global and so managing freelance reporters on-the-ground is also necessary. The successful candidate must be of sufficient experience and seniority to assume full responsibility for leading the news coverage and developing strong links with sector leaders in higher education.

International travel is part of this role and you will be expected to join events and trips in other countries.

Key responsibilities

Will be required to help the CEO and director of insight to maximise the impact of The PIE’s coverage and longstanding reputation in the global education sector. Expected to work with reporters and external freelancers to craft original news stories which will service our readership. Responsibility for planning a weekly news cycle and helping edit reporters’ stories to promote the strongest news lines. Managing and mentoring of junior members of the editorial team is essential. Attending conferences and events on behalf of the news desk, and presenting plans to the senior leadership team.

Key skills

Proven track record of news editing at a high level in a mainstream news outlet preferable. Ability to seek out exclusive stories and to identify and manage breaking news stories. Experience of speaking at conferences in a compelling and engaging fashion. Experience of planning coverage of future news events and preparing diary items of news. Experience of working to tight daily deadlines. Strong ability to write and edit articles clearly, concisely and to house style. Familiarity with and experience of digital storytelling techniques. A good working understanding of social media channels.

Additional desired skills

Commercial appetite to build broader business opportunities for this global, independent media brand, which runs events in the UK, Australia and the USA and delivers virtual events to our global audience. Our business also has a recruitment and consultancy division.

We are a trusted voice in a multi-billion dollar industry enabling students to study and live overseas and gain global opportunities.
