Sifted is looking for an intern with an infectious enthusiasm for journalism and startups to join us in our (semi) remote newsroom for three months.
Over those three months, you will work closely with Sifted’s editorial team, including our editor Michael and deputy editor Amy, to cover the day’s top news stories, alongside assisting with other editorial tasks. You will be a core part of our team, receive mentorship from experienced journalists and gain a real insight into the running of a young digital media platform.
This is a paid position, at the London Living Wage. No formal qualifications are required to apply, apart from the right to work in the UK. We’re first and foremost looking for people who are curious and eager to learn — and have the skills and aptitudes outlined below.
We strongly encourage anyone from an underrepresented background to apply for this scheme. We’re committed to building a more diverse newsroom: we know that with more diverse voices we’ll tell better stories and with a more diverse team we’ll build better products.
What will you be doing?
- Writing news and data stories
- Subediting, proofreading and factchecking
- Uploading stories to our website
- Photo sourcing and editing
- Researching and coming up with ideas for articles
- Joining editorial and wider team meetings
What are we looking for from applicants?
- Can write to deadline with flair and personality
- Have a keen eye for detail
- Have excellent written and spoken English
- Enjoy the challenge of keeping several plates spinning at the same time
- Are proactive and self-starting
- Communicate clearly and with confidence
- Are fascinated by the startup/tech industry
- Have an interest in social media and digital publishing
What are we like to work for?
We have a small company mindset, but big company goals, and can draw on many of the strengths and benefits of a world-respected brand, the Financial Times. We’re friendly, hard-working and passionate about what we do. We have a flat structure, collaborate across disciplines, and everyone has impact across many areas of the business. We value feedback, honesty and clear communication.
What do we offer?
Hours: Flexible, but standard hours are Monday to Friday, 9am — 6pm
Term: Three months (please note, this internship is not guaranteed to lead to a full-time position)
Pay: London Living Wage, on a contractor basis
Location: Remote
Mentorship: Over your time at Sifted you will work closely with our editors and reporters on news, features, subediting, newsletters and data stories
How to apply
Please send a cover letter, explaining why you are interested in this internship and how your skills and experience fit with the criteria outlined above, along with your CV, by uploading them here.
Please also pitch us two ideas for articles that you think would be a good fit for Sifted and share two pieces of writing that you are proud of. (These do not need to be pieces of journalism, but they do need to demonstrate your skills as a writer.)
Applications close Wednesday June 2 and we will be in touch to let you know if your application has been unsuccessful.
We will run interviews in the week of June 7. The provisional start date for this role is July 5.
About Sifted
Sifted is a new media platform reporting on the world of technology and startups in Europe, backed by the Financial Times. In two years we’ve become known for our high-quality journalism and fresh viewpoints, and a must-read for many founders, investors and people working in startups across the continent.
Our team of reporters, based across Europe, aren’t chasing after the latest funding announcements or product releases; plenty of other sites have got that covered. We are telling the stories that should be told — big startup trends, compelling company profiles and the everyday lessons that come from growing a business and messing up along the way. We have grown from a standing start to 650k monthly unique visitors, and over 80k newsletter subscribers, and have a lively social media following.
