What will I do as part of the scheme?

The Advanced Journalism Apprenticeship is for people who are curious about the world, hungry to tell the stories happening around them and already showing some journalistic potential. You’ll get two years mix of study and learning on the job leading to a level 7 apprenticeship and the industry recognised NCTJ National Qualification in Journalism (NQJ).

You’ll be based in one of our newsrooms and will work alongside news teams to develop your journalistic skills, creating and delivering quality content for multiple platforms. You’ll get hands-on experience involving researching, writing and broadcasting news. One of our apprentice places is with BBC Sport providing the opportunity to specialise in sports journalism.

The scheme takes 2 years to complete after which time you should have the advanced skills and training to take on a Journalist / Journalism Researcher role at the BBC.

This scheme replaces the Journalism Trainee Scheme (JTS).

Who are you?

We’re looking for people at the beginning of their career but you should already be demonstrating your journalistic skills, for example be writing articles for a local or student newspaper or website, working at a radio station with news content, blogging or vlogging or creating social media content. You may also have a Journalism Diploma or other Journalism qualification such as the Junior Journalist Apprenticeship.

If you’re a creative storyteller with a passion to understand the world and get to the facts this is your chance to get first class journalism training with the biggest broadcasting organisation in the world.

You will:

• Be fascinated by news and current affairs with a hunger to understand the world and get to the facts
• Already be showing your journalistic skills and creativity
• Be curious and regularly read, watch and listen to a host of local and national news on websites, TV, radio and social media
• Be an imaginative storyteller who can help us reach new audiences including people who might not normally consume news
• Be flexible and adaptable due to the pace of work and learning process
• Be over 18 by the time the scheme starts in January 2022

Application process

• You will complete a short online application which will include some written and video questions
• If we like what we see, you will be invited to complete the second stage of the online application process
• If you are successful at this stage you will then be asked to attend an Assessment Day

Due to the volume of applications it is a long process, and it could be up to three months until you hear from us about the final outcome of your application.
