It’s often said a reporter is only as good as their contacts, so you’ll be keen to quickly get stuck into the patch and build relationships with trusted sources you can rely on for an exclusive tale or valued information.
You should also be familiar with other forms of newsgathering, including submitting FOIs, monitoring relevant social media groups and poring over jargon-heaving council agendas.
Reporting is by no means a 9-5 job, so you’ll understand the importance of covering meetings, events and breaking news outside of ‘normal’ office hours.
You must have a concise writing style, excellent spelling and grammar, and a confident phone manner.
An interest in, and knowledge of, politics and healthcare would be an advantage.
This full-time position would suit a graduate with a relevant degree or diploma course looking to start their career in journalism.
The ideal candidate will be NCTJ-qualified and have 100wpm shorthand. A full, clean driving licence is essential.
