Journo Resources is a social enterprise that wants to change journalism for the better. We believe that journalism should look more like the rest of the country and every year we help more than 200,000 people with their journalism journey. But with just one full-time member of staff there’s only so much we can do. This is where you come in.

Thanks to the kind support of our payment platform Steady we’re looking to hire our first membership manager. You’ll help to look after our 300 paying members and take the lead on our strategy to double our membership. Our membership platform is a hugely important part of our ambition to be a more sustainable and more impactful team, and this role will be key to the future of our organisation.

This is a varied role, working across several areas. As a new position in our organisation, you will have the chance to help define your own role. You’ll be responsible for creating and implementing the strategy to double our current membership; this could cover everything from social media and newsletters to pitching the organisation to other businesses.

Please note, this is not a journalism role and will focus solely on our memberships.

About You

>We’re looking for someone with at least one to two years’ experience within a relevant membership or marketing role – though this may be through a voluntary role or side project. This role might be for you if:

  • You’re passionate about building a better media industry, or interested in working for social enterprises more generally.
  • You have experience within membership/marketing/sales roles and are full of ideas about how we can improve.
  • You’re able to write high-quality copy in a friendly tone of voice.
  • You’re comfortable with all things digital and know your way around Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn. Knowledge of Google Docs and Slack is a bonus.
  • You’re self-organised and motivated to work independently and remotely – our team doesn’t have an office and work across the UK, but we do keep in touch on both a work and social basis.
  • You’re comfortable with talking to new people on a regular basis.
  • You’re detail focused, whether it’s a tweet you’re writing or looking at the trends in data on Google Analytics.

This may be the role for you if you’re a freelancer looking for some stable income, or perhaps if you already have a part-time job at another organisation.

The Admin Details

Turns out there’s a lot of stuff you need to know when you’re hiring someone. Here are the main details:

  • This is initially a fixed term contract for six months initially. We’d love this to become a permanent role with expanded hours in the future, but this depends on future funding. As a team, we’ll work as hard as possible to make this happen.
  • We believe the media shouldn’t just be tied to London (and we also don’t have an office), so you can be based anywhere in the UK as you will be working remotely. You’ll need to have the right to work in the UK, as we don’t have a VISA sponsor agreement.
  • You’ll work two and a half days a week. In practice, this means you’ll work two days one week and three the next. Ideally, this would be Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday, but we’re open to hearing what you need!
  • Our team generally works from 10am-6pm, but again, we’re happy to discuss this if you’re an early-riser, have childcare commitments, or anything else.
  • This role will report to our director and founder, Jem Collins. You’ll also work with our design lead Jack and our trainee reporters, Hannah and Inayia.
  • The salary is £25,000pa full time equivalent. This works out at £12,500pa at the pro-rata rate. This is £1,041.67 per month.
  • Everyone at Journo Resources gets unlimited holiday with a minimum you must use – we all need a break, after all More is available on a fair use policy. The full time equivalent is 25 days plus the eight English bank holidays – a total of 33 days. Pro-rata this is a minimum of 16.5 days a year.
  • Everyone is offered the chance to join our pension scheme, regardless of minimum opt-in age. We contribute at a rate of 3 percent.
  • You will also get free access to all our Journo Resources career development resources, including professional development events and external training.

Our Commitment To Hiring

Our previous data shows us that people tend to rush applications within the first few days. Please don’t panic – take your time. Here’s why:

  • We look at every single job application and don’t start shortlisting until the job has closed. It doesn’t matter if you’re the first person to apply or the last.
  • Everyone who applies will receive an email to let them know the outcome of their applications, with feedback of why it was or wasn’t progressed. So if you haven’t heard from us, don’t worry, it just means we haven’t looked yet.
  • We always keep job applications open until at least the closing date listed. We will never close a job early, so you’re able to plan ahead with your application.

We’re an organisation that’s committed to making journalism look more like the people it serves and are keen to hear from people from all backgrounds. We’re particularly keen to hear from people who are underrepresented in journalism, including but not limited to: people of colour, disabled, trans, and working class applicants.
