The News UK archives can lay claim to be the foremost newspaper collection in the world. They contain hundreds of thousands of original and often unique documents and artefacts, a complete back file of our newspapers and tens of millions of images and negatives – which together form an unparalleled resource.

These record events from around the world across more than two centuries of publishing and chart the evolution of the company’s titles, activities and people.

News Archives comprises the document, artefact, back issues, picture collections and information & records management services. It supports all News UK departments with content acquisition, creation, management, delivery and protection.

Day to day you will:

  • Work primarily at News Archives’ Rainham (Essex) site combined with News UK’s London Bridge headquarters where appropriate.
  • Learn how to ensure that the records and archives of the company and its subsidiaries are professionally maintained and that they, and the information in them, are made available as required in response to internal and external demand.
  • Understand how to ensure that all group contracts and copyright requirements are adhered to, day-to-day supplier relationships are managed and the image collections are maintained.
  • Provide a scanning capability for all requests received across the business and provide research support to editorial and the wider business, maximising the full potential of the available information and image resources.
  • Be involved with gaining image clearance rights from Picture Editors and liaising with News Licensing to undertake IP research and help maximise revenue opportunities.
  • Identify and promote opportunities to create added value from the collections, with the aim of increasing revenues.
  • Assist in carrying out the full range of the department’s regular tasks.
  • Complete manual handling training. The Archives are based in a multi-level storage facility, and some material is accessed via step ladders and will be transported via trolleys to and from the office or collection points.

What we’re looking for from you:

During this role you will learn on the job while also studying for a Level 3 Library, Information and Archives Services Assistant Apprenticeship so no prior experience is required.  The following skills would be beneficial:

  • Strong investigative and research skills across all resources
  • Possess good judgement and discretion when dealing with confidential/sensitive information

  • Strong information management skills
  • Flexibility to work across the week including weekends and shifts
  • Maths and English GCSE A-C/ 4-9 or equivalent
