Hyphen, an innovative journalism start-up focused on new and established Muslim communities in the UK and Europe, seeks experienced reporters (permanent) to cover stories across the UK. You will be based in either Manchester or Liverpool; or Glasgow or Edinburgh.

For the right candidates we offer competitive rates and flexible working across the full journalistic spectrum, including news reporting, feature writing, long reads and audio-visual content.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Propose, research, report and write insightful and well-contextualised features, occasional analyses and news stories drawn from your area of the UK and beyond.
  • On occasion, produce quick-turnaround stories.
  • Develop and use multimedia tools to amplify, illustrate and promote your work, including creative use of social media.
  • Maintain regular and clear communication with editors to ensure all are properly briefed on activities and work schedules.

Requirements:

  • Candidates should have a robust insight into the aspirations and influences of new and established Muslim communities in the UK, across political, social, economic and civil society fields, as well as sport, business, arts and lifestyle.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience of delivering engaging stories at a national level and a wide-ranging roster of contacts.
  • Excellent reporting and writing skills across shorter and feature-length stories.
  • Must be able to demonstrate sound journalistic practice, such as balance, careful sourcing and a solid, practical understanding of media law.
  • Work collaboratively with other reporters and editors.
