Journo Resources is looking for a senior staff writer to join our team on a part-time basis, to help us push the website forward in 2021.
We’re a tiny team, but we have big ambitions to shake up the journalism industry, and this will be the biggest investment we’ve ever made to increase both the quality and quantity of our output. In short, you’ll get to play a key role in helping us achieve our goals.
The Role
This will be a varied role, working across several areas. You’ll be given the time to work on your own original features, as well as working across our social media, events programme, and supporting paid subscribers.
The main responsibilities are split across four areas – but we’re a small team, so other ad-hoc tasks might come up from time to time:
Writing & Editing (50% Of Your Time)
- Pitching and writing original, in-depth features and news stories for our website,
- Editing, uploading, and formatting pieces in WordPress – both your own stories and those from freelancers and fellows.
Managing Social Media (20% Of Your Time)
- Putting together a daily schedule of Tweets and Instagram posts for our editorial output, job adverts, and other resources,
- Helping to curate and manage our growing Facebook group, with weekly prompts and engagement.
Developing Resources For Our Paid Supporters (20% Of Your Time)
- Helping to grow our subscriber base and increase monthly donations,
- Curating new supporter resources, such as a fortnightly newsletter.
Running Our Online Events Schedule (10% Of Your Time)
- Pitching ideas for workshops and booking guest speakers,
- Writing and uploading event descriptions,
- Marketing events across various channels.
About You
We’re looking for someone with at least three years journalism experience to join our team as a senior staff writer. This will be a senior position in our team, and will require independent working and self-management, so isn’t a position suitable for entry level candidates.
This could be the job for you if these points also sound like you:
- You’ll be passionate about helping increase access to the journalism industry, and believe in Journo Resources’ mission,
- You’ll have experience in coming up with original, well-researched stories, based on interviews, research, and analysis,
- You’ll live and breathe all things digital – so you’ll know your way around Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, as well as WordPress and Google Drive,
- You’re an organised and motivated person, who is able to work independently on projects and manage your time effectively,
- You’re familiar with Journo Resources work, and feel like you understand our style and tone of voice.
This may be the role if you’re a freelancer looking for some stable income, or perhaps if you already have a part-time job at another organisation.
The Admin Details
Turns out there’s a lot of stuff you need to know when you’re hiring someone. Here are the main details:
- This is a fixed term contract for six months initially, although dependent on funding we would like to extend this, and will be working as hard as possible to make this happen.
- We believe the media shouldn’t just be tied to London (and we also don’t have an office), so you can be based anywhere in the UK as you will be working remotely.
- You’ll be working two days a week – because of the deadlines within the organisation this needs to be a Monday and Thursday.
- Our team generally works from 10am-6pm, but we’re happy to be flexible with these hours where possible if you would prefer to start slightly earlier.
- This role will report to our director and founder, Jem Collins and you’ll work with our freelance team and fellows.
- The salary is £30,000pa full time equivalent, which works out at £12,000pa for the pro rata rate. We’ll also buy you an independent magazine of your choice every quarter, from our friends at Akin.
- At the full time equivalent, we offer 25 days of holiday plus the eight bank holidays in England where we’re based – a total of 33 days. Pro rata this works out as 13.2 days a year.
- We expect this position to start in January 2021, by the time we’ve gone through applications and conducted interviews.
Our Commitment To Hiring
Our previous data shows us that people tend to rush applications within the first few days. Please don’t panic – take your time. Here’s why:
- We look at every single job application and don’t start shortlisting until the job has closed. It doesn’t matter if you’re the first person to apply or the last.
- Everyone who applies will receive an email to let them know the outcome of their applications, with feedback of why it was or wasn’t progressed. So if you haven’t heard from us, don’t worry, it just means we haven’t looked yet.
- We always keep job applications open for at least the closing date listed. We will never close a job early, so you’re able to plan ahead with your application.
We’re an organisation that’s committed to making journalism look more like the people it serves and are keen to hear from people from all backgrounds. Yes, including you.
