At the moment, Journo Resources runs on less than £50 a day. To be honest, even I was shocked when I did the maths myself last week. That’s just under £18,000 a year to cover everything we do, from our rates directories and newsletter to workshops, one-to-one advice and in-depth guides.
As you might have guessed from the numbers above, we don’t currently have any members of staff. We have some amazingly talented freelancers who help out for a couple of hours a week, and I do my level best to throw my all at this project – but the reality is that I’m still working three days a week elsewhere to pay the rent.
This isn’t a sob story – I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve achieved in the past few years. A lot of people say they do a lot with not a lot, but I truly believe we’ve created some amazing things on a literal shoestring. 150,000 people have used this website since the start of 2020. We’ve listed more than 6,000 jobs and hundreds of freelance rates. Our lockdown Zoom workshops have been attended by 500 people.
NEW: Currently, our whole organisation runs on less than £50 a day – but it’s time to break free of the bedroom and do something bigger. Can you help us raise £1,000pm for our first employee? #JR2021 pic.twitter.com/p738PKyhqp

But, the reality is that for us to move forward and really change the way the media industry looks, it needs to be bigger than just me in my bedroom. Even if I worked on this project every hour of every day, it still takes more than one person to bring in revenue, write and edit pieces, run workshops, create interactive resources and, well, the list goes on. We need to hire a person.
From now until the end of the year, we’re fundraising to get our regular donations up to £1,000 a month. We’re not that far off – we’re already at £700 a month, thanks to some amazingly generous people. Every penny of this will go towards hiring our first ever employee – a senior staff writer for two days a week. This role will mean we’ll be able to double the amount of content on the site, opportunities listed, and the number of workshops we run.
Everything we do at Journo Resources is about making the media industry look more like the people it’s supposed to serve, and everything is free to access to the people who need it. But to make that vision happen we need your help – for just the price of a hot chocolate every month.
